Q:  What is Rosacea?
A:
Rosacea is an inflamation of the skin of the face and upper chest.  This condition often occurs in people over 30 years of age.  People begin to develop facial redness due to a genetic predisposition and to 3 primary triggers: the sun, stress, and foods that contain histamines (chocolate, red meats, cheeses and certain vegetables and fruits).

Q:  Is Rosacea contagious?
A:
No.  50% of Rosacea patients develop this due to genetics, particularly those who are from blond or redheaded/blue eyed families with type 1 skin (skin that burns rapidly in the sun).

Q:  What are my treatment options if I have Rosacea?
A:
Patients should avoid triggers of Rosacea including sun exposure, stress, and various foods which dilate facial blood vessels.  Patients should also apply topical medications which decrease redness and acne bumps.  If topical gels don't work, then oral antibiotics can be somewhat helpful to treat flares.  Occasionally lasers can be used to treat the redness of Rosacea.  A line of skin care products by Pevonia is now available to us in conjuncture with your medications and it can be bought at The Spa at Highland Oaks.

Q:  How can I cover up my Rosacea?
A:
Green based make-ups can be used to camouflage Rosacea.  If this is not an adequate solution, then laser light can be used to destroy the blood vessels without hurting the rest of the skin.

Q:  Is Rosacea painful?
A:
No, but it can predispose the skin to easy irritation, burning, stinging, and itching to almost anything that comes into contact with the skin.

Q:  Is there any cure for Rosacea?
A:
There is no known cure for Rosacea; only medicines that will control it.  Even laser does not prevent recurrence.
